Ebook About One tenacious local detective can only get the help he needs from a former forensic photographer with a serial killer on the loose in the new romantic thriller from New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin. When former forensic photographer Miranda Rhoads moves to the seaside town of Lost Beach, she's decided to make her living as a wildlife photographer and put crime scenes behind her. But her plans are quickly upended when one morning, she comes across a couple sleeping in a canoe, entwined in an embrace. Looking closer, she realizes the man and woman aren't asleep—they’ve been murdered. Detective Joel Breda sets out to find answers--not only about the unidentified victims in the marshy death scene, but also about the aloof and beautiful photographer who seems to know more about his investigation than he does. As they begin to unravel the motivation of a merciless serial killer, Miranda and Joel must race against the clock to make an arrest before the killer can find them first.Book Flight (The Texas Murder Files Book 2) Review :
First, a full disclosure – Laura Griffin is a one-click author for me. Her Tracers series, as well as her Wolfe Security series, are books which I recommend all the time. Flight is book #2 in a new series: The Texas Murder Files. (Hidden, the first book in the series was published in 2020.) The books do not need to be read in order – like all her books in series, but it’s nice to be able to connect characters across the various plots.Miranda Rhoades is experiencing a case of career burn-out and heads to the coast of Texas for some space and bit of a tangent in her career path. While out taking photographs, she discovers the bodies of a young couple in a canoe in a pre-dawn marsh. This brings her into the orbit of Detective Joel Breda, lead investigator on the new murder case. With Miranda’s previous background in law enforcement, she is convinced, by some mild arm twisting on Joel’s part, to join the Lost Beach PD. She and Joel, along with the other detectives, begin to fit the wonky shaped clues together to find the killer.I loved Miranda. She wasn’t wishy-washy or a damsel in distress or the embodiment of a Lara Croft bad-ass. She felt real to me. Joel was a perfect foil for her slightly prickly personality and his patient wooing of Miranda was sweet to watch unfold.I always appreciate the amount of research Laura Griffin puts into her books. I always feel like I learn something while enjoying a great story. From the information on the symbology, to exotic birds, to photography – she must have spent eons scouring sources. I’m looking forward to her next book later this year. I enjoyed Flight a lot. The characters are well-developed and I truly appreciate the Joel and Miranda are "normal" people with real jobs, not billionaires or super heroes. They are highly skilled and respected in their professions but they each have had personal issues in their past that they have to work through. For the most part, they do that together. While they mystery kept me guessing until the very end, I was a bit disappointed in how it played out but that's a nit. I crave more of the secondary characters from Nicole to Emmet to Owen to Leyla and I hope that Ms Griffin writes those stories soon. Most of all, I appreciate the way that the way that Miranda and Joel fell in love. Their journey wasn't without a bump or two but it wasn't an angst-ridden whiplash plagued ride. It was a delightful fall over the edge with just enough intimacy to make you want a fan. The intimate moments were well-written and descriptive without going over the top. Well done and well enjoyed.
