Ebook About Book one in the new Fae Out of Water seriesTemp worker David Evans has been dreaming of Dr. Alun Kendrick ever since that one transcription job for him, because holy cats, that voice. Swoon. So when his agency offers him a position as Dr. Kendrick’s temporary office manager, David neglects to mention that he’s been permanently banished from offices. Because, forgiveness? Way easier than permission.Alun Kendrick, former Queen’s Champion of Faerie’s Seelie Court, takes his job as a psychologist for Portland’s supernatural population extremely seriously. Secrecy is paramount: no non-supe can know of their existence. So when a gods-bedamned human shows up to replace his office manager, he intends to send the man packing. It shouldn’t be difficult — in the two hundred years since he was cursed, no human has ever failed to run screaming from his hideous face. But cheeky David isn’t intimidated, and despite himself, Alun is drawn to David in a way that can only spell disaster: when fae consort with humans, it never ends well. And if the human has secrets of his own? The disaster might be greater than either of them could ever imagine.Word count: 76,300; page count: 303Book Cutie and the Beast (Fae Out of Water Book 1) Review :
This is the first book of E.J. Russell I have had the privilege to read and it most certainly shall not be the last. I try to read a book a day and have therefore read quite a few in this particular genre. Further, the “romance” genre only has so many possible outcome options so after a while it’s kinda sorta easy to guess where things are headed. That said, it ultimately comes down to the delivery. Boy does Ms. Russell know how to deliver! The story has two protagonists, David, the young man who can’t hold even a temp job, and Alun, the grumpy, rather physically unattractive psychologist who literally glowers at his patients. There is a lot of drama and ultimately a happily-ever-after end. But getting there is all the fun. There are, for me, two things I especially love about the author’s writing. First, her writing style delightfully flows in a manner that you feel you are being gently carried down a stream without any shallow rocky areas where you have to get out and drag the boat to get to the next point. Second, Ms. Russell’s sense of humor is so wickedly delightful it is absolutely impossible not to regularly and literally laugh out loud. I was spontaneously laughing so hard I scared my dog and she moved to another room. When I finished the book I felt so good I immediately purchased the other two in the series. Kudos to Ms. Russell for a job well done. Absolutely loved this book. I had read other books in this universe, out of order, as I didn’t realize there was a universe. As such, there were spoilers for the action here but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I wish all the books were under the same series and numbered that way however as it would make it much more enjoyable to have read them all in the correct order. The MCs here are Alun, a cursed Sidhe lord, banished from Faerie and now a psychiatrist to the supernatural beings of Portland, and David, a human temp who gets assigned to be his office manager. There are a ton of problems with that scenario which of course means romance will ensue.I could not put the book down. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s heart wrenching, it’s irritating, it’s infuriating, and towards the end it’s action packed. Can’t ask for much more. The story arc moves well though I’d have liked the character development/back story to have been a bit quicker. The writing style is engaging and the way several pieces come together at the end is fantastic. The set up for the next books in the series is subtle but certainly has me ready to dive in immediately to book two. Highly recommend!
